Rage Quit
A way to leave the governance system and take your fair share of the treasury with you.
How it works
A member disagrees with a decision, or simply wants out. Before the decision executes, the member calls the exit function. The contract burns the member's shares and sends back the same fraction of the treasury assets. The member leaves with money, not with a grievance. The DAO continues with fewer members and a smaller treasury. Because anyone can leave at any time, a majority cannot take the minority's funds.
Use it when
- You want minority members protected from a majority that controls the treasury.
- You want people to join a pooled fund without fear of being trapped.
- You need a pressure valve that ends disputes without a fork.
Watch out for
- A wave of exits after a contested vote can drain the treasury below what remaining plans need.
- Assets that cannot be split, such as an NFT or a locked position, break the fair-share promise.
Example
Moloch DAO. Moloch DAO introduced rage quit in 2019, letting any member burn shares and withdraw a proportional slice of the pooled ETH.
