Holographic Consensus

A staking game that lets a few attentive members pass proposals for the many, once stakers vouch for them.

The Holographic Consensus card: 10 ♦ of Consensus

How it works

By default a proposal needs an absolute majority of all members to pass, which rarely happens. Anyone can stake tokens to predict that a proposal will pass, or stake against it. If the stake in favor climbs above a moving threshold, the proposal is boosted. A boosted proposal switches to a relative majority: it passes if more votes are for than against, with no quorum. Stakers who predicted correctly win the stake of those who did not. The betting market filters proposals, so voters attend only to the ones that matter.

Use it when

  • You run a DAO too large for every member to vote on every proposal.
  • You want to scale decisions without dropping the safety of a full quorum.
  • Reward members who spot good proposals early.

Watch out for

  • Stakers can boost a bad proposal, and a small group of voters can then pass it.
  • Complex rules: members struggle to understand thresholds, boosting, and stake outcomes.

Example

Genesis DAO. DAOstack's Genesis DAO ran this mechanism on Ethereum from 2019, using GEN token stakes to boost proposals that then passed by relative majority; it no longer operates.
