Wait for Quiet Voting

A vote that cannot close while the result is still moving; each late flip extends the deadline.

The Wait for Quiet Voting card: 4 ♦ of Consensus

How it works

A proposal opens with a normal voting window and a shorter quiet period, often the last day or two. Members vote as usual. If the leading side changes during the quiet period, the deadline moves forward by the length of that period. The clock keeps extending as long as the outcome keeps flipping. When the leading side stays the same through a full quiet period, the vote closes and the result stands. Last-minute swings therefore give the other side time to answer.

Use it when

  • You fear last-second vote swings that other members have no time to answer.
  • Protect small or low-turnout votes from a whale who waits until the final block.
  • You want deadlines that are firm when the result is settled and flexible when it is not.

Watch out for

  • A determined minority can keep flipping the result to delay a decision they dislike.
  • Members cannot plan around a fixed end date, so execution timing becomes uncertain.

Example

DAOstack. DAOstack's Genesis Protocol, used by Genesis DAO from 2019, included a quiet ending period that extended any vote whose result flipped near the deadline.
