Instant Governance
A live setting for a protocol parameter: token holders stake on values, and the stake-weighted median becomes the rule.
How it works
The DAO picks a parameter to govern, such as a fee rate or an inflation rate. Each token holder stakes on the value they prefer. The system sorts every staked value from low to high and finds the stake-weighted median: the point where half the stake sits below and half above. That median becomes the live parameter. Holders can move their stake at any time, and the parameter follows. No proposal, vote, or deadline is needed.
Use it when
- You need a numeric parameter that adjusts over time without repeated votes.
- Set fees, rates, or limits where a middle value beats extremes.
- You want a value that extreme bids cannot drag far from the center.
Watch out for
- It only works for numbers on one scale, not for yes or no choices.
- There is no proposal or debate step, so a large holder can shift the value without warning.
Example
Steem. Steem, from 2016, set parameters such as the account creation fee from the median value published by its top 20 stake-elected witnesses, a close relative of this design.
