Pass/Fail Voting

The simplest vote: members say yes or no to a proposal, and the side with more support wins.

The Pass/Fail Voting card: 2 ♦ of Consensus

How it works

A member submits a proposal with one clear question. Voting opens for a fixed window, and each token holder casts a yes or a no, usually weighted by the tokens they hold. Some DAOs add an abstain option that counts toward quorum but not toward the result. When the window closes, the DAO checks that enough votes were cast (the quorum) and that yes beats no by the required margin. If both checks pass, the proposal executes. If not, it fails and the proposer can revise and resubmit.

Use it when

  • You need a clear decision on one proposal with no alternatives to weigh.
  • Ratify a budget, a hire, or a treasury transfer that is ready to execute.
  • You want a rule that every member understands on first contact.

Watch out for

  • Voters can only accept or reject; they cannot improve a flawed proposal or pick between versions.
  • Low turnout: a small, motivated group can pass a proposal while most members stay silent.

Example

Aragon. Aragon's Voting app, used by hundreds of DAOs since 2018, put each proposal to a yes or no vote with a support threshold and a minimum approval.
