Oversight

A designated group that watches DAO actions and can flag, pause, or veto ones that break the rules.

The Oversight card: J ♣ of Coordination

How it works

The DAO names a small group, elected or appointed, and writes down what it may check and what it may do. Proposals and payments run through the normal process. The group reviews them before or after execution against the written rules. If something looks wrong, it acts within its limits: it can raise a flag, pause a contract, or veto the action. Everything it does is logged and can be reviewed by token holders. Members of the group can be removed by vote.

Use it when

  • You hold a large treasury and need a backstop against a hostile or buggy proposal.
  • Check that funded teams deliver what they promised before the next payment.
  • Give members a place to report rule breaking and have it acted on.

Watch out for

  • The overseers become the real power if their veto is broad and nobody oversees them.
  • Reviews add delay and cost, and a bored committee waves things through.

Example

Nouns DAO. Nouns DAO has since 2021 let a founders' multisig veto any passed proposal, a power meant only to block attacks on the treasury.
