Soulbound NFT
A one-of-a-kind badge minted to a wallet for an achievement or membership, and locked there for good.
How it works
The DAO decides what deserves a badge: attending an event, finishing a course, joining as a member. It creates an NFT contract with the transfer function removed. When a member qualifies, the DAO mints one badge to that member's wallet, with metadata describing what it stands for. The badge cannot be sold or gifted, so seeing it in a wallet proves the holder earned it. Other tools can read the badge to grant roles, access, or votes. The issuer may keep a right to burn it if it was granted in error.
Use it when
- You want proof of attendance, completion, or membership that cannot be bought.
- Give a role or a vote to the exact people who earned it.
- Build a visible track record that members can show across the ecosystem.
Watch out for
- Badges minted to the wrong wallet or a lost wallet are stuck there forever.
- Anyone can mint a badge to any wallet, so the issuer must be known and trusted.
Example
Otterspace. Otterspace launched on Optimism in August 2022, letting DAOs issue non-transferable membership badges that Snapshot and Guild could read for roles and votes.
