Multiple Funding Sources

A treasury fed by several independent income streams, so no single funder can starve or steer the DAO.

The Multiple Funding Sources card: 3 ♥ of Incentive

How it works

The DAO lists the ways it can bring money in: protocol fees, grants from other DAOs or foundations, a token sale, membership dues, donations, or yield on the treasury. It sets a target mix, for example no more than half of the budget from any one source. Each stream flows into the shared treasury under its own terms and reporting. Members track the mix each quarter. When one source shrinks, the others cover core costs while the DAO looks for a replacement. Funders who want influence must compete with every other stream.

Use it when

  • You depend on one grant or one investor and want to reduce that risk.
  • Fund public goods that no single payer will cover on its own.
  • You want the treasury to survive a bear market or a lost partner.

Watch out for

  • Each source brings its own reporting, terms, and expectations, which adds work for a small team.
  • Several sources can still move together, for example when all of them are paid in one token.

Example

Protocol Guild. Protocol Guild has collected pledges from many projects since 2022, including Lido and ENS, so Ethereum core developers do not depend on one funder.
