Resistance Voting
Proposals pass by default; members vote only against what they dislike, and enough objections block it.
How it works
A member posts a proposal and an objection window opens. Nobody needs to vote in favor. Members who oppose the proposal cast a vote against it, weighted by their tokens. If the total against stays below a set threshold when the window closes, the proposal passes and can execute. If the threshold is reached, the proposal fails. When several options compete, each collects objections and the option with the least resistance wins.
Use it when
- You want routine decisions to move without asking everyone to show up.
- Choose between options by finding the one fewest people hate.
- You have low turnout and a positive quorum keeps stalling the DAO.
Watch out for
- Harmful proposals slip through when members are inattentive or the window is too short.
- Spam proposals force members to keep watching and objecting.
Example
Colony. Colony's motion system, launched in 2021, treats a proposal as passed unless another member stakes an objection within the window, which triggers a vote.
